Memories: An ‘Old Boy’ recalls his birchings

 

This acount of of the ‘method and manner’ of birchings he received at school was published in newspapers across the world in 1889.

‘I for one respect the birch with respect that borders on affection,’ the writer tells us. Make of that what you will.

'I for one respect the birch with respect that borders on affection' is indeed a perhaps unexpected comment but then I suspect many former recipients of cp at school may perhaps have similar nostalgic reflections that were not apparent at the time but have developed subsequently. I am probably in that group too.
