Birched for assault on prefect

A boy who was sentenced to a birching by a court after he assaulted a school prefect describes his ordeal. ‘The first stroke was so hard that some of the branches broke off.

It happened in the Isle of Man (an island off the northwest coast of England) in 1972.

Following the birching the boy’s father who was allowed to witness it reportedly ‘went berserk.’ He said, ‘I saw the birch breaking up the second time it hit him. I just lost my temper.’
