TV Drama: School Play 4
We are now on the fourth extract from six
from School Play, the BBC
TV drama that was broadcast in November
1979.
The story so far is that the Monitors
(prefects) in the House are clamping down on boys who are being ‘festive’
(meaning cheeky). After an incident during ping-pong in Long Room one boy
cheeks the Monitor Perkins but does not own up to it.
Later, the Monitors suspect that Tony
Younger was the culprit and in this extract they call him to the study for a
‘bumming’. Meanwhile, the boys believe that Simon Julius Rose, a new boy
(‘grunt’) whom we met in the first extract, ‘showed up’ (informed on) Younger
and he is shunned by the other boys.
All the boys are played by adult actors.

A stunningly detailed caning. A similar procedure to Another Country but with even more detail. 12 strokes seems surprising but perhaps being told earlier he was to be beaten for two different reasons meant two sets of six.
ReplyDeleteAppropriately somber until the other boys' reaction of mirth that it occurred - a reaction that is, to me, frankly chilling. Keenly done.
