Rubber hoses, steel-edged rulers used in school punishment
In a survey of 758 United States secondary
schools a professor found ‘The rubber hose, steel-edged ruler and rod are still
to be found in some teachers’ and administrators’ desks and offices.
‘Punishments such as keeping hands above
the head on a mark on the wall … sitting in a dark room’ were also discovered.
This from a 1957 news report that asked
‘Is corporal punishment out of date?’ Below that is a survey of corporal
punishment in schools undertaken by a local newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia,
United States.
