Ban the cane: a hot topic
In the years running up to the abolition
of corporal punishment in UK schools in 1987, newspapers were full of reports
and comment pieces arguing the pros and cons of the cane.
Here is a typical example that tries to
give an airing to both main views with people chipping in their own personal
experiences of punishment.
It is from the London Evening Standard,
21 November 1984.

ReplyDeleteHaving only seen the small picture section before the full article with the guys input is very informative and does show how cp use varied . The 25 year old in 1984 who didn't get caned says it was a rare occurrence but for the rest who all got at least one dose of the cane it was in more frequent use but varied significantly. It's also good one does mention that it was often the same lads getting it repeated which has been proved by punishment book records. Also the offenses show how trival you could get caned for but also the standards offences like fighting which got you both a automatic six from the headmaster with no inquiry on who was to blame you both got whacked.
ReplyDeleteBrave at the time for these guys to own up and be pictured in a paper stating about their canings and doubt they expected it still to come up 40 years later! It has also always fascinated me that three of them have the same initials.
Even when he's standing up his bottom looks great. I wish we could see him bend down and touch the floor.
