The Yank at Red Circle School

The Red Circle School first appeared in the Hotspur when it launched in 1932 and was a mainstay of the storypaper / comic for the next 25 years. It competed with the Billy Bunter stories in the Magnet. The stories featured a more energetic, exciting, and more up-to-date public school than Greyfriars. It soon became one of the most popular school stories of its time.

This episode called Terror of Yank House was published on 14 October 1933. To the distress of the Red Circle regulars, a new boy, Spike Moran, arrives at the school and not only is he American, his father is a famous boxer.

Moran is a bully but he hadn’t reckoned with Mr Smuggs, the schoolmaster, ‘a fussy man who was noted for his harsh temper and the number of canes he broke in the course of a term.’

  1. As many readers will probably know. Caning a boy while his head was stuck in a window, was also the method used for a "Pop tanning" at Eton. It prompted the putting together of these two otherwise unrelated pics: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51714212641_577c2d9edf_c.jpg
