Memories: Retired Head defends caning for ‘minor offences’
The Home Secretary
has recently announced his belief that caning should be used ‘as a last
resort.’ I totally disagree with him. The cane should be used, moderately and
lightly, for minor offences – what I call ‘childish mischief,’ For children,
punishment, the penalty for breaking the rule, should follow as closely after
the offence as possible – in 1996, a
retired headmaster defended the use corporal punishment to keep children in
order.
As
published in the Hull Daily Mail, 5 December 1996.
