Teachers say caning is effective
There seemed to be
an endless argument about the use of corporal punishment in schools in the UK
during the 1970s and 80s. Ahead of a case to be heard at the European Court of
Human Rights, Reuter news agency reviewed the state of the debate.
‘Caning is
traditionally one of the sanctions available to teachers in this country. It is
used as a means of maintaining good behavior and persuading some children who
are idle to be less idle. Parents use the cane, so why shouldn’t teachers who
are in a more difficult situation,’ a spokesman for a group of teachers
advocating the cane, said.
Reuter agency report as published in the
Gazette (Montreal, Canada), 5 March 1979.
