Memories: Fear of the paddle on the wall
Discipline was missing in schools,
newspaper columnist Bill Ward recalled in 2000, and that was largely because
the paddle no longer hung on the principal’s wall.
‘And the fact was well known that the paddle
could and would be used. Just seeing that monster hanging there struck terror
into even the most hardened student.
‘And also knowing that what you received
at school was not anything compared to what you were going to get when you got
home.’
