How it works: The Edwardian Schoolmaster

Here’s an oddity from a science magazine How It Works.

‘What school was like 100 years ago?’ dissects the characteristics of the Edwardian schoolmaster, complete with mortarboard, gown and cane.

It also discusses the use of the cane and birch.

It comes from How It Works Issue 70 (undated), available free-of-charge here.

  1. Some of the other items in How It Works Issue 70 suggests that it was published between 2013 and 2015. So the phrase "now illegal in British schools" was correct. Unlike the same phrase in some early 1990s publications.

It's interesting that this article supports the theory that boys were usually spanked on their bottoms not hit on the hand. Some sources and some dramatisations disagree on this.
