Students prefer swats rather than suspension
Corporal punishment was on the wane in
schools in Norfolk, Virginia (United States), in 1957 according to the town’s
local newspaper. It surveyed schools and found the paddle was still available,
but rarely used.
One school principal told the newspaper he
kept a paddle and sometimes would give the student the choice of a two-day
suspension or a paddling. Usually, the student opted for the swats.
As
published in the Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, Virginia, United States), 12
May 1957.
