When caning was banned in London
When the London local government authority
banned corporal punishment in primary schools in 1971 it was done with
opposition from headteachers. The caning of children across the buttocks had
been used as punishment in British schools since the early 19th
century.
The ban would affect children aged five to
eleven, although the cane was still available in secondary schools.
