How school canings are done

‘Caning is carried out by having the school official inflicting the punishment order the delinquent to “bend over and touch your toes.” The rest of the procedure is then carried out with dispatch.’

This newspaper report for American readers in 1962 gives an update on caning in Britain.

  1. As far as I remember the canings I got were supported either being over a chair or the headmaster desk, the slipper, dap was certainly given just on the command, bend over and as long as you were in suitable position for the slipper to hit the target backside the teachers didn't seem to worry if you were touching toes or grasping shins. Then as the article says the actual beating was normally swiftly applied once in position.
Of course you can search on this site for the wonderful authentic trouble in prep clip which has four lads getting caned and assuming the position unsupported but holding it in different ways as they get six strokes from headmaster Keith. It also shows how quickly the punishment could be done with the guys coming in, bending over, getting a firmly applied six of the best (as you can tell from their gasps and facial reactions) and then are heading out the door in under thirty seconds. There were more formal, longer punishment but often it really was the short, sharp shock they said it was.
