Favourite School CP Movie Clips: 19
Kes takes the No. 19 spot in my personal all-time
favourite school corporal punishment scenes
from mainstream movies.
It is a film renowned for its realism and
authenticity and the scene in which a group of boys are caned on the hands by
the headmaster is entirely realistic: the director Ken Loach says he had the
‘headmaster’ cane them for real and the boys didn’t know it was going to
happen.
Today we’d see this as an actual assault
and the police would probably become involved, but back in 1969 when the film
was made they seemed quite proud of the trick they played (see
more here).
Despite the irregular way in which it was
filmed the scene is one of the most authentic caning scenes ever seen in a
mainstream movie (that is one not made for the ‘fetish’ market). It was set in
a real secondary modern school and unlike The Guinea Pig (which I chose in the No.
20 spot) many members of the audience might
recognise it from their own personal experience.
Look out for more of my favourite top 20 movie clips in coming weeks.

Fans of the Kes movie may have been startled to see trailers for the forthcoming movie 28 Years Later, in which a Dai Bradley look-a-like is seen trudging up a grassy hillside with a dour expression exactly the same as Billy Casper wore most of the time. As well as similar drab clothing. There's likely to be lots of similar weather too.
ReplyDeleteThis is not coincidence, apparently the script writer said last year that Kes was the inspiration for a lot of his work on 28 Years Later. The kid actor this time is Alfie Williams from Newcastle upon Tyne, aged 13 at the time of filming. Filming locations were all over north-east England and a couple of other places. There probably aren't any scenes of school corporal punishment.
I noticed today that David Bradley has a list of the original locations where Kes was filmed, at https://kes-billycasper.co.uk/locations.html
