Comic: Billy Bunter Goes West

Billy Bunter is quite possibly the best-known schoolboy in English fiction. His exploits at Greyfriars School appeared in many story papers and comics throughout the 20th century. At first he appeared in full length stories in papers such as the Magnet which often ran to tens of thousands of words. As reading habits changed and story papers became picture comics so did the Bunter stories.

The character was invented by Frank Richards but over the years other writers and artists took on the task of trying to breath originality into the character.

Here’s an example of Billy Bunter in a comic strip from the Comet in 1952. Billy and the rest of the gang from Greyfriars are in the Wild West in America. Needless to say, form master Mr Quelch is not far away with a cane.

As published in the Comet, 5 April 1952.
