Comic: Sandy Dean’s First Term

 

Even though by the 1950s weeklies aimed at boys had stopped being mostly text and relied more on drawings, the school story continued, often unchanged from twenty or thirty years previously.

Sandy Dean’s First Term is set at Tollgate, an all-boys public (elite) school complete with dormitories and fagging (being a servant) for prefects, many of whom were bullies.

In this story, Sandy and some of his fellow fourth-formers have been forced to fag for Haughty Hawkins, the most unpopular prefect at the school. So, they could attend a school water polo match they locked Hawkins in a store cupboard. He escaped and later Sandy gets a message saying that Tough Talbot, the school captain, wishes to see him in the gym.

When Sandy arrives, he finds he has been tricked and Hawkins and other prefects are waiting for him. Hawkins has a bundle of punishment canes under his arm and he intends to use them …

The story ran across a number of weeks in the Lion comic, starting on 4 October 1952.
