Is absence of cane creating spoiled children?

A member of the House of Lords decries the schoolmaster’s lost art of wielding the cane, in 1952. A newspaper comments, ‘the almost complete elimination of this weapon from the school curriculum in recent years may be worth reconsideration.’

As published in the Portsmouth Evening News, 4 December 1952.

  1. Could we not have a video including this evocative scene, bent boy, tight trousers, sharp creases. He needs to be bent more tightly though. Pity about absence of cane.

    1. If his head were right down the trousers would be tighter. But we need to see the cane laid across it.

    2. But fancy caning with your jacket and gown on. Take them off and give your right arm some freedom, then he'll feel it more.

    3. Hey! Wait a minute, did school clothing look like that in 1952? The newspaper article may have been of that era but the picture comes much later. A nice one all the same.

    4. This just reminds me of myself and my mates bent over like this as we got the cane at school my trousers was very tight round my bum and it hurt like hell the more you bent over. Our Headteacher had a very strong right arm and laid every stroke hard on your bum hard. Painful but happy days
