Is caning a good thing?
A headmaster faced
criticism after he beat 24 pupils in a mass caning. In an editorial comment the
local newspaper couldn’t quite make up its mind if caning was a good thing … or
not.

I started my teaching career in Leicester about one month before this cutting. The school had a new headmaster who was a great advocate of the cane and who got into the papers by caning a whole class. I don't know that this was the incident referred to, but it wouldn't surprise me.
