Movie: Nicholas Nickleby (2002)
Probably one of the most famous boarding schools
in English fiction is Dotheboys Hall, run by Mr and Mrs Squeers. It appears in
the novel the Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
by Charles Dickens.
They run their establishment like a prison
and physically, verbally, and emotionally abuse their young charges on a
regular basis. There is a particular beating that Dickens uses to expose the
horrors of such places.
The story involves nineteen-year-old
Nicholas, his mother, and his younger sister, Kate, who venture to London to
seek help from their wealthy, cold-hearted uncle Ralph, an investor who
arranges for Nicholas to be hired as a tutor at Dotheboys Hall
in Yorkshire.
The novel has been adapted several times
for movies and television. This 2002
American / British co-production does not pull its punches in the famous
scene.
