TV drama: The Prince and the Pauper

There have been a number of film and television adaptations of Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper. It is the story of a poor boy named Tom Canty and Edward, the Prince of Wales who exchange identities but events force the pair to experience each other's lives as well.

In this clip from the BBC 1996 television adaptation Edward is failing in his schooling and as a result his whipping boy Master Humphrey is beaten. In days of yore, it was not allowed to beat a prince so they would choose a good friend of the prince to take the punishment on his behalf. The theory being that he would not want to see his friend suffer and would therefore behave.
