The school where a birch is kept in the cupboard
Some schools are steeped in history and some of it is more
pleasant than others, as these two new boys at Harrow
public school found out when they were given a tour.
Martin Smith, the college custodian, shows the Fourth
Form room, which dates from 1615 and is as ancient a place as you might want to
see. And tucked away in a cupboard is a birch rod. Smith talks the boys through
how a birching would have taken place.
The clip is from Harrow, a
Very British School, an eight-part television series first broadcast by Sky
TV in 2013. It is frequently rebroadcast on digital television in the UK.

Interesting that he said they were birched on the ''back.'' I wonder if he just didn't want to say bare buttocks, which as we all know was usually how it was done!
