Under the rod: or swishing anecdotes
Under the rod: or swishing anecdotes is an intriguing article from the Boy’s Own Paper annual for 1882 – 83. BoP was a children’s storypaper (comic) of the day. The article which has a chuckle in its voice details many real-life floggings and one or two from fiction.
“It has been wickedly suggested that if a schoolmaster
who in his fondness for the rod … wants stimulus and variety, it would surely
be a vast improvement to flog the master once a day.”

are available from the Hathi Trust Digital Library here.)
