Punishment book preserved in online video
Steve Parish who
calls himself an “historical interpreter” takes us on a trip around a
punishment book from All Saints School, wellingborough, Northamptonshire, in
this video clip.
“Children were
routinely beaten. It was very carefully recorded. The idea was not to thrash
a child but to make children understand that there will always be consequences
of your actions and that you will have to pay in some way,” he says.
There were
“simple” offences like impertinence, inattention and misbehaviour during drill.
In the video he
takes us through some of the pages identifying a number of cases, including
John Trolley who was caned for "calling out” to a teacher in the street.
You can see more
of the video here.
