Retired schoolmaster makes canes for parents

A RETIRED schoolmaster has started making canes so
that parents can give erring sons six of the best.
“I have advertised them in the local papers and have
sold 16 since January,” 63-year-old Mr Conway Pope, who taught in a private
school, said at his home in Stratton, Dorset, yesterday [9 March 1974].
He started selling the canes at 10p each after
conducting his own survey on corporal punishment among 240 families in the
district.
“I found that most parents did not know where to get
schoolmasters’ canes so I decided to do something about it,” he said.
“A local merchant supplies me with the material which
I make up into round-handled canes.
“I don’t make a profit but I get the satisfaction that
I am helping to restore discipline in the home.
“In my time, I’ve whacked a fair number of boys and I’ve
never found any resentment.”
