Comic: Colorado Kid
The Colorado Kid was another unlikely
character dreamt up by comic writers in an often vain attempt to breathe new
life in to the stale school story genre.
The basic idea was that Spud Branigan, the
son of a Colorado trapper, had been sent to one of the top public (i.e. elite)
schools in England. An American millionaire had in effect bribed the headmaster
to take him on as a pupil.
Naturally, the six-feet tall boy was a
fish out of water and didn’t understand the rules. When he was made to ‘fag’
for a prefect (that is, work as his servant) he ended up caning the
sixth-former.
In the episode below, the prefects must
now decide how to deal with Spud.
The Colorado Kid appeared in the Hornet
which was published by D. C. Thomson from September 1963 to February 1976,
after which it was merged with the Hotspur.
