Why not six of the best?

Oscar Millard, a writer for the Los Angeles Times, calls for the return of corporal punishment to schools. Recalling his own schooldays in England he says. ‘Nobody resented a deserved caning. As a matter of fact, the schoolmaster was regarded as a decent sort if he magnanimously offered to lay on “six of the best” instead of requiring an offender to spend Saturday afternoon in detention memorizing Latin.’

As published in Omaha World-Herald (Omaha, Nebraska, USA), 16 October 1977.
