Corkey’s Academy

Boys’ story papers – the forerunners of comics – relied heavily on school stories to fill their pages. But in truth one school could seem to a reader very much like any other. What to do? Publishers and authors had to find more and more ingenious (or maybe just plain daft) ways to make a school stand out from the others.

Corkey’s Academy which ran in the Rover in the 1920s featured Corkey who was an ordinary grammar school boy who through fate inherited a nearby posh Academy. Corkey takes over the management of the Academy while also still attending the grammar as a pupil.

In this episode from 1927 there’s a rebellion at the Academy and Corkey is on the receiving end of a whacking ….
