Tiger Jake’s Academy
School stories were part of
the staple diet of boys’ story papers in the first half of the last century. Writers
had problems trying to make their stories more interesting than rivals. Often,
they put masters and boys in outlandish circumstances.
One such was Tiger Jake’s
Academy in the Hotspur. Jake was an animal trainer at Benger’s Mammoth Circus … but also the
schoolmaster for the forty sons of the circus workers. In this episode
published on 3 March 1934 he is confronted with a new pupil, Hercules Samson,
who just happens to be the world’s strongest boy. And, the boy does not want to
be in the classroom …
