Movie: Housemaster
Housemaster was a book, a play and a film from the nineteen-thirties written by Ian Hay. We looked at it here.
Now, here’s a clip from the Associated British Picture
Corporation film of 1938 starring Otto
Kruger as
the housemaster, Mr Donkin. It is available to buy as a DVD.
The plot revolves around a new headmaster at an
English public (that is, elite) school. He causes ructions when he unleashes a
welter of red tape and puritanical reforms.
The boys don’t see eye-to-eye with the new regime and
that lands Bimbo across two chairs in the housemaster’s study.
The film is billed as a ‘comedy’. It certainly won’t
have you rolling in the aisle, clutching your sides in pain, but it is an
interesting example of a gentle English humour of the time.
