Uproar after 23 boys publicly caned
Twenty-three boys were publicly beaten at their school after they ‘ducked’ three masters under water taps (it was allegedly a tradition). It happened in Australia in 1964 and as these newspaper reports show, it caused some controversy. It was like a public hanging, a newspaper commented.

Regarding the picture credit. This appears to be an AI re-framing of a very similar picture that I think I first saw on this blog. The original appears to be hand drawn in black and white; all of the students are girls, but the expressions, clothing and positioning of the two teacher characters is identical. Other differences are that the original has the cane in front of one of the students' faces, thereby partly obscuring it. In the original one of the students has their hand in front of their mouth to whisper to another, not in shock as in this version. And in the original the characters in the paintings on the wall are more visibly teachers (in this version it is uncertain).
ReplyDeleteThere is more about this on Facebook. The boys were caned on their hands. 12 called onto the stage to be caned but then the headmaster asked if anyone else was involved and another 11 come forward.

Regarding the picture: I’m pretty certain that originally it was a detail of a larger drawing in which schoolgirls were being punished in front of the school. I think it’s from one of those spanking magazines that carried fiction stories that were about before the Internet took off. I had A.I. redo it because the original had only schoolgirls in the audience. I got them made into schoolboys. I also got A.I. to colour it. So, perhaps, strictly the credit should read ‘Picture of unknown origin, reimagined by A.I.’
