Prefects’ Canings in spotlight

The thorny issue of whether school prefects should be allowed to cane younger pupils was sometimes reported by newspapers in New Zealand.

In 1949, Nelson College was the centre of attention after a boy refused to be punished for breaking a rule about walking on the grass. It was reported that prefects ‘carried him into the College’ and caned him.

We previously saw another case of prefects’ canings in New Zealand, this time at Waitaki Boys’ High School in 1942 (here).

  1. I was never a prefect nor beaten by one, but did they really curve their cane round like that? And did they have to buy their own or did the school supply them?
