Prefects can carry on caning
Whether prefects should be allowed to cane
younger boys became a hot topic of discussion around Waitaki Boys’ High School
in the 1940s.
The school, described as ‘one of New
Zealand’s best-known public schools,’ discussed the issue many times and it
became a regular feature in newspapers.
For example, in December 1942, the school’s
governors confirmed the prefects’ right to cane.
