Prefects can carry on caning

Whether prefects should be allowed to cane younger boys became a hot topic of discussion around Waitaki Boys’ High School in the 1940s.

The school, described as ‘one of New Zealand’s best-known public schools,’ discussed the issue many times and it became a regular feature in newspapers.

For example, in December 1942, the school’s governors confirmed the prefects’ right to cane.
