Will a hair split the cane?
Here’s a curiosity from a local newspaper
in England from 1932. On the page especially for children ‘Aunt Joy’ discusses
whether a hair placed across the palm of the hand would split the
schoolteacher’s cane. She also debunks the idea that an onion rubbed on the
skin will have any effect.
Over the years many other tales have been
told by naughty schoolchildren about defying the cane. We saw some before here
and here.

Such an absurd suggestion that it's hard to believe it was actually tried but new pupils can be gullible and the speculation that it is one born of mischief by older pupils rings true too. One cannot help but imagine the recipient's face when the reality bites with the knowledge that there are more strokes to come.
