The Big Stiff

 

Mr Septimus Green, aka The Big Stiff, was a most unusual schoolmaster in English comics: he was against the cane and when he was appointed to the village school in Pendlebury one of the first things he did was to break all the canes in the classroom.

He was tremendously popular with the boys but not so with the parents and the school board …

The Big Stiff first appeared in first issue of the Hotspur on 2 September 1933 and although his character developed over the years he is almost completely forgotten today.

For the historians among us (or those old enough, the nostalgists) here’s the complete story from that first issue.
