A Sanderson man has admitted he beat a school principal with a paddle used to
spank his son.
Auddie Johns was put under $500 bond after pleading
guilty to aggravated assault at an arraignment yesterday [15 June 1960]. His
case was bound over to circuit court.
Ernest Harvey, principal of the Sanderson Elementary
School, was cut on the head and bruised on the arms and body as a result of the
Tuesday beating, Sheriff Ed Yarbrough reported.
The sheriff said 12-year-old Auzzie Johns and 28 other
pupils were spanked by the principal for misbehavior about three weeks ago.
Yarbrough said Harvey told him the boy's father came
to the school Tuesday about the incident and after about 20 minutes discussion,
Johns asked the boy to point out which paddle among several in the principal’s
office had been used on him.
Harvey said Johns then took the paddle designated by
the boy and struck the principal a number of blows until the paddle broke. The
sheriff said the paddle was a pine board about 18 inches long, two inches wide
and half an inch thick.
Harvey said the Johns boy was given only two or three
light blows with the paddle, the same as the other children. The sheriff quoted
Johns as saying he didn’t approve of beating Kids with a stick that size.
