TV Nation 1: British Empire built on caning

The American documentary maker Michael Moore explored the English obsession with caning for his 1994 BBC TV series, TV Nation. He met Dai Llewellyn, the owner of the Bognor Cane Company, which produced punishment canes. (We met the founder of the company here).

Llewellyn – clearly an enthusiastic flogger – maintains, ‘The British Empire was the largest empire that was ever built in the history of mankind and most of it was achieved with these fine whoppy canes.”

The wine glass on the table and the bottle in the background might go some way to explain his eccentric behaviour. Naturally, he tests out a cane on Moore’s backside.

Finally, he gives a demonstration on how to deliver a caning, using a poor innocent couch as a victim. It’s all in the wrist action, apparently.

The excerpt also includes a scene from the rarely seen 1973 BBC TV version of Tom Brown’s Schooldays.

There is a second clip from TV Nation here.

  1. Wow ..... The 1973 TV version of Tom Brownes Schooldays which had very well filmed caning scenes was when I realised my serious interest in Caning. I was 11 years old and knew instantly watching these scenes that I’d discovered a deep seated interest which would be with me from then on. It was screened on Sunday afternoons and I used to wait for each episode with great excitement hoping that there would be at least one caning scene for me to view .... are you aware if it is possible to view the entire series anywhere at this point? That excellent little snippet of a public caning has piqued my interest greatly once again ....

I received the following message ..... “ Unfortunately, this seller won't send to your location. Please update your delivery address and try again” .... to say I’m gutted is putting it mildly ... 🥲🥲🥲
