TV Nation 2: Caning a dummy

 

Here’s a delightfully bonkers scene from American documentary maker Michael Moore. In 1994 he explored the English obsession with caning for his BBC TV series TV Nation.

He met Member of Parliament Harry Greenway, ‘a former schoolmaster and skilful caner’.

For no reason that I can discern, Greenway demonstrates with a dummy how to cane a boy on the backside. Hard! ‘Don’t tease a boy. If he’s going to be punished you don’t want him to be punished every few days. You want it to be once and for all,’ he says.

A true oddball. And, who is that figure seemingly dressed as an adult schoolboy lurking in the background?
