‘Popular’ fronts
The Penny Popular was launched by the Amalgamated Press in October 1912 and after about four years became the “All-School story Paper”.
And as was common with school
stories of the time that meant plenty of swishings with the cane and most
especially, the birch.
Corporal punishment was such
an integral part of the stories that illustrations often appeared on the front
cover to entice readers to buy.
