Movie: Term of Trial
Term of Trial is a British film from 1962 that seems to be largely forgotten today.
It’s claim to fame is that it
featured Terence Stamp in his first film role. He plays Mitchell, a schoolboy (Stamp was about
24 years old at the time) who gets caned in front of the class after he is
discovered passing around an obscene photograph.
The film which is set in an
industrial English town in the 1960s is about the schoolmaster Graham Weir,
played by Laurence Olivier, who was imprisoned during World War Two for
refusing to fight, a pacifist stance that permanently damaged his career and
reputation.
So, the caning he dishes out
is a turning point in the plot.
Note how in both the classroom and the
study scenes a crook handled cane is clearly on display and one assumes ready
for use at a moment’s notice.

Not a film I'd heard of before. Terence Stamp looks far too old for the part but two excellent actors nevertheless. Yes the canes do appear to be deliberately readily available. TR
ReplyDeleteVery interesting clip - thank you for posting it! Olivier is - in my opinion, slightly over the top in the scene where he uses the cane; he's much better in the 2nd half. Personally, I still feel caning the hands is downright barbaric. The butt should get it. The bottom is not used like the hands are. Anyway thank you again for the clip & this is just my 2-cents.
