‘In favour of the tawse’
The leather tawse favoured by schools in
Scotland was far superior to the rattan cane, used in England, especially when
applied to the palm of the hand, a conference of headmasters and headmistresses
was told in 1921. Many budding pianists had been ruined by the cane, a medical
expert said.

Caning on the hands can be quite harmful. Surely much better for boys to be caned on the backside?
