Move for ban after 20 caned

In 1972 a report on caning in schools in the Suffolk town of Lowestoft revealed that 20 boys among a school population of 9,067 had been caned. Offences included bullying, vandalism, and truancy. No girls were caned.

Some members of the education committee councillors thought even 20 was too many and called for a ban on corporal punishment.

Here’s how local newspapers covered it.
