Birching at Eton, 1874
I’ve lost count of the number of articles,
pamphlets and books that have been written about Eton College, regarded by many
as England’s ‘top’ school. So many of them take time to dwell on the use of the
birch.
Here’s a summary of an article in the Educational
Reporter in 1874: ‘Doubtless the recipients [of a birching] like it better
when it is over than in prospect.’
As
published in the Eastern Daily Press (Norwich), 3 December 1874

"gross breaches of discipline or morality" as close as the writer could get to saying "buggery"
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of birching for schoolboys and think that it should be brought back
