Memories: When canes ruled the classroom

 

Local newspapers in England love to get their readers to send in stuff about days gone past and it comes as no surprise that those of a certain age cannot suppress their memories of corporal punishment.

Here’s an example from Hereford. Writing of one teacher, ‘He delighted in giving six of the best with a thick heavy cane. He would smash it down like a lunatic.’
