Comic: The Swots and the Blots

The Swots and the Blots was a strip about warring factions at Riversdale School. According to Dennis Gifford’s Encyclopedia of Comic Characters the ink-slinging saga opened with the school’s annual prizegiving day, with their mortar-boarded teacher (known as ‘Teach’ for short) awarded cups to Cyril Simper for neatness and Penelope Prigg for spelling. The decision swiftly aroused the scruffier schoolkids, and the scrimmage that ensued separated the pupils into Swots and Blots for all time.

The strip started in Smash comic in 1966 and ran until 1971. When Smash closed it moved to Valiant for another year, before emerging in Cheeky Weekly.

Of course, the teachers not only wore mortarboards and gowns they also swished their canes at every opportunity.
