A headmaster in South Africa reportedly
caned 400 of the 442 boys in his school because they did not have regulation
haircuts.
Some of the boys were seniors and had only
20 days to go before they left school.

Yes I'd like to see that boy bend down and touch the floor, lift up his jacket and borrow that old man's cane. I am sure l could make a better job if it than he. But l wouldn't beat him for his hair which is quite smart enough for me. I'd think up some other offence, maybe throwing the board rubber at a friend in class but hitting me. I think that could be six. But in class it after class? Border.
ReplyDeleteI apologise for some inexplicit writing. I meant l would be the one to lift up the tail of the boy's jacket to give me a wide expanse of bottom as the target. At the end l was giving myself the option of caning him in class (as an example to the rest) or privately. I should also add my preference for the slipper rather than the cane. In fact l am Border not anonymous.
ReplyDeleteIn the caning scene in Kes, the headmaster canes about six boys in something like ten seconds. Even tho that's only on the hand. It's the headmaster's silly speech before caning them that takes up all the time. If he could keep up that rate of caning, he could cane 400 boys in less than fifteen minutes.
ReplyDeleteProper canings on the bottom are obvs slower. But there's a video on the corpun.com site called "House caning day at a boys' boarding school" where a 21st century housemaster in Zimbabwe canes eleven boys on their bottoms in less than two minutes. (but none of them get six of the best) Sustaining that speed would get through 400 boys in less than an hour and a half (a long lunch hour or a really strange after school detention)
So I think these stories of mass canings are definitely not impossible if a headmaster was determined enough. And maybe felt he couldn't back down after making a threat. There are plenty of stories of teachers in the UK doing similar things when it was legal. Even tho the numbers were usually smaller.
