Smokers given unusual choice of punishment
When a high school principal in Missouri, USA caught three teenagers with cigarettes, he gave them a choice: eat the cigarettes or take a whacking.
This report from a newspaper in Ireland
says he offered them a caning but I guess this being an American school a
paddle was involved.

ReplyDeleteNow is it a caning if a paddle is used? Surely it is a paddling? Of course a whacking can be either. Even a slippering is a whacking and can be extremely painful too.
Nice red blazers. At least one wearing a waist-coat. Very smart. Would they have to take their blazers off before bending down? How many is the standard number of strokes for smoking?

ReplyDeleteAnother scenario (if this were a British private school in the 1970s) is that he *is* a fag, and has been ordered to bring the matches and cigarettes for the other two. Also means the possibility that he'll get the blame and they won't (like the little kid in Kes).
DeleteStoopid old newspaper writers deliberately introducing inaccuracies just so their readers don't have to engage their brains enough to realise that people in other countries do things in different ways.
ReplyDeleteWojtek the soldier bear ate cigarettes regularly throughout his life (as well as enjoying honey, marmalade, coffee and beer), and still lived to age 21, so it didn't seem to do him any harm.
ReplyDeleteWikipedia says about bears that "Young adolescent males tend to be least aggressive". Which is slightly different from humans I guess.
I would definitely rather take a caning than eat eighteen cigarettes!
