Gunpowder, treason, and plot: the 5th of November
In Britain The Fifth of November is Guy Fawkes Night when
children traditionally let off fireworks. Those of us of a certain age might remember
setting off catherine wheels, bangers, and rockets. You used to be able to get
a box load for ten bob. Sigh, those were the days.
Here are adverts for fireworks published
in British boys’ storypapers in the 1930s. Not surprisingly they include cliched
drawings of schoolmasters brandishing their canes.
