School predicted in 1937 he would be ‘torn limb from limb’ because he advocated
abolishing corporal punishment in schools and sending back canes and birches to
the government.

I don't think my dear old aunt would have agreed with the gentleman. She specifically sent her boys to a very traditional boarding school, well known for high standards, that were attained by a more than ample use of the cane.
ReplyDeleteAs for juvenile delinquency her take on that was "flay them with green birch, then rub salt into their backsides"!
So, he thought corporal punishment was ineffective, yet he used it three or four times a month. Hmmm.
