An interesting article - it's often articulated that the cane was a deterrent for boys who hadn't been caned; having a kind of 'mystique' that deterred misbehaviour but here we have a boy absconding because of the dread of a caning but, as he was caned only a week before, in this case it is the thought of another caning rather than any theoretical mystique.
ReplyDeleteThe 1950's, English public schoolboy, absconding, wasting police time and yet not given a flogging?
ReplyDeleteI think exasperated Mirror readers would have been expecting a 15 year old spoilt brat to be given a good dose of the birch!
