Priest fined after ‘slightly excessive’ caning
A priest at a Catholic school
was fined by magistrates for delivering a “slightly excessive” caning to an
11-year-old boy.
The prosecution told the
court, “A cane was put on the table. Defendant [the priest] told the boy to
take off all his clothing, except his shirt, and, he believed, his boots, and
the boy did so.
“Defendant then sat down on a
chair, pulled the child across his knee and struck him with excessive severity
on the bare body with the cane.”

Sentinel (Stoke-on-Trent, England), 11
January 1933.

Slightly excessive seems to be an understatement despite the unusual positioning for a caning. 25 strokes from top of back to below the knee is quite a range too and over the top especially given the boy's age too. Slightly excessive? Definitely an understatement in my view even though it was a serious offence that could have caused considerable injury if accurately thrown.
